چکیده

The driving vision for our work is to provide intelligent, automated assistance to users in understanding the status of their email conversations. Our approach is to create tools that enable the detection and connection of speech acts across email messages. We thus require a mechanism for tagging email utterances with some indication of their dialogic function. However, existing dialog act taxonomies as used in computational linguistics tend to be too taskor application-specific for the wide range of acts we find represented in email conversation. The Verbal Response Modes (VRM) taxonomy of speech acts, widely applied for discourse analysis in linguistics and psychology, is distinguished from other speech act taxonomies by its construction from crosscutting principles of classification, which ensure universal applicability across any domain of discourse. The taxonomy categorises on two dimensions, characterised as literal meaning and pragmatic meaning. In this paper, we describe a statistical classifier that automatically identifies the literal meaning category of utterances using the VRM classification. We achieve an accuracy of 60.8% using linguistic features derived from VRM’s human annotation guidelines. Accuracy is improved to 79.8% using additional features.

P300-based Stroop study with low probability and target Stroop oddballs: the evidence still favors the response selection hypothesis.

This paper addresses the issue of the locus of action in cognitive processing during Stroop effects. It uses the P300 latency to assess stimulus processing effects, but, for the first time, under conditions in which Stroop stimuli are rare and target stimuli. The study was also concerned with demonstrating that apparent P300s during verbal responding are in fact uninterpretable due to contamina...

An Investigation of Dual Task Effect on The Severity of Stuttering in School-Age Children

Objective: Stuttering is a speech disorder that occurs with frequent and abnormal disruptions in speech, such as sound repetition, sound prolongation, and sound or airflow blockage. Although various hypotheses and factors have been introduced including cognitive and linguistic factors, the etiology of stuttering has not been fully understood. According to the vicious circle hypothesis, increase...

Classification of Speech Acts in Tutorial Dialog

Computer models of tutorial dialog need to segment and classify the learner’s contributions into sequences of speech acts. The responses of the computer tutor we have developed (called AutoTutor) need to be sensitive to the speech acts of the learner’s contribution during the previous turn. We developed and tested some models that classified the speech acts in naturalistic tutorial dialog into ...

Oscillatory Brain Responses Reflect Anticipation during Comprehension of Speech Acts in Spoken Dialog

Everyday conversation requires listeners to quickly recognize verbal actions, so-called speech acts, from the underspecified linguistic code and prepare a relevant response within the tight time constraints of turn-taking. The goal of this study was to determine the time-course of speech act recognition by investigating oscillatory EEG activity during comprehension of spoken dialog. Participant...
